Earth Revealed
Earth Revealed is an earth planet model of unique construction and design that
has been developed primarily as a learning tool to be used in schools, colleges,
and other institutions involved in the teaching and learning of Earth science
in general and Plate Tectonics in particular. The model consists of a number of
curved members representing Earth's crustal tectonic plates. Each plate is hand
crafted in striking relief and all tectonic features are clearly and accurately
depicted.
The underside of each plate is magnetized so as to allow adherence of plates
to the exterior of a base globe which itself is constructed of a ferromagnetic
material. In this way each plate can easily be attached or detached from the base
globe for a hands-on examination of particular plate characteristics.
The base globe is an assemblage of concentric solid spheres representing Earth's
internal strata - inner core, outer core, and mantle. These internal strata members
are engineered in such a way so as to allow easy assembly or disassembly. Again,
this facilitates a tactile inspection of individual strata.

Plates are painted as to resolve land mass characteristics such as rain forest,
tundra, desert, and the like. Ocean floors are painted distinct shades of blue
to present relative ocean depths. Accordingly, continental shelves, lakes, and
shallow water beds are painted a light blue while areas far below sea level are
painted a deeper shade of blue. Inner strata members are painted contrasting shades
of yellow, orange, and red allowing a clear distinction to be made between strata
boundaries.
Earth Revealed measures 16 inches in diameter and is mounted on a ball-bearing
pedestal to allow for fluid manual rotation.
