Feb. 12, 2002: A strong earthquake rattled Taiwan's eastern coast on Tuesday, seismologists said. No damage or injuries were immediately reported.

The 6.2-magnitude tremor struck about 14 miles east of Hualien, a city about 110 miles southeast of the capital, Taipei, the Central Weather Bureau said.

The tremor was felt in Taipei, shaking windows and buildings.

Two moderate quakes, both of magnitude 5.2, struck Hualien within half an hour after the first tremor, the weather bureau said.

Tremors frequently shake the island. A 7.6-magnitude earthquake in September 1999 killed 2,378 people and destroyed more than 40,000 homes.
